Nativity play tips No. 2: Learning the songs

Posted November 14, 2013 by Fran Carpenter

Rehearse songs thoroughly & separately from acting parts until probably 5 to 7 days before your performance. The songs are the show pieces of your Christmas extravaganza and the children need to know the words well and sing them with clear diction and complete confidence. I have observed nativity play rehearsals for a long time, and the worst thing you can do is try to teach the songs and acting parts all at the same time, with perhaps 90 children sitting on a hard floor in the hall for long periods of time, day after day, drained of any energy they may have started with! The singing in the show needs plenty of enthusiastic energy input of its own. Give the songs the dedicated time and energy they need to be really spectacular. Plan your rehearsals carefully, give the songs plenty of quality time, and then the music in your show will slot together beautifully with the acting nearer your performance date.
